File your 2290 without the paperwork
Form 2290 reports the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax on trucks, truck tractors, and buses with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The 2026-27 tax period runs July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, and returns for vehicles on the road in July are due by August 31, 2026.
Filing early has a built-in advantage: transmit the return now and pay the tax later, any date within the due period. Early filers also have room to fix errors, correct a VIN, or add newly registered vehicles before penalties and interest ever come into play.
The watermarked Schedule 1 arrives by email as soon as the IRS accepts the return

01.
The 2026-27 tax period opened July 1, 2026 and runs through June 30, 2027. Returns for vehicles in service since July are due August 31, 2026. For trucks first used later in the year, Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the first-use month. Filing late adds penalties and interest.
02.
Anyone registering a highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file. Vehicles expected to travel 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) are filed as suspended and owe no tax, but a return is still required.
03.
The tax starts at $100 for a 55,000 pound vehicle and increases $22 for each additional 1,000 pounds, up to $550 per year for vehicles over 75,000 pounds. Logging vehicles pay reduced rates.
04.
Schedule 1 is the proof of payment the IRS returns after accepting Form 2290. State DMVs require it to register or renew a heavy vehicle. E-filed returns receive a Schedule 1 with a digital watermark, usually within minutes of acceptance.
05.
Five things: the business name and address as registered with the IRS, an Employer Identification Number (an SSN cannot be used), each Vehicle Identification Number, the taxable gross weight category of every vehicle, and a payment method such as EFTPS, bank withdrawal, or a credit or debit card.
E-file IRS Form 2290, fix VINs, amend returns, and claim Form 8849 credits. The watermarked Schedule 1 arrives by email once the IRS accepts.
